Yoga

Hatha Yoga is the foundation of all branches of yoga. Hatha Yoga is an ancient discipline intended to balance all of the body's systems through conscious breathing and the practice of exercises or postures called asanas. Yoga practice has been done as a means of reducing stress, increasing the overall tone of all of the body's systems, improving strength and flexibility, enhancing feelings of general well-being, and so much more.  In Kriplau Yoga, we challenge ourselves through holding asanas for an extended time, meditation, breathwork (pranayama), and deep relaxation; we do this all with an inward focus.  In Vinyasa Yoga, we focus on coordinating pranayama with flowing asanas.  In these classes, we’ll do Kripalu Yoga in conjunction with Vinyasa Yoga to warm up the body.

Beginners and students that are more advanced will be able to tune in to their bodies while engaging in a combination of gentle, moderate, and vigorous yoga classes.  The classes are mixed, so beginners can work toward the basics of learning yoga and the more advanced students can work toward precision and going deeper into asanas with advanced variations.

What kind of health condition should I be in to practice Yoga?

We use Yoga to help build a greater awareness of our bodies.  Please do not feel that you already need to be in top notch shape to begin practicing Yoga.  If you have any reason to question whether you are healthy enough to do Yoga, ease your mind by speaking to a physician and talk about your intentions to engage in Yoga.  We hold classes with no judgement of age, body type, or fitness level.  We are all learning and growing together.  Just come ready to explore and learn more about yourself.

Preparing for class

If you have a yoga mat, please bring it with you, otherwise I have mats that you can borrow for the class.  Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that will not restrict your movement or breathing.  Also, try to practice yoga on an empty stomach when possible.  If you do need to eat within 4 hours before the class begins, then try to eat something light.  Yoga Journal suggests that if you absolutely have to have something in your stomach, then drink a cup of hot lemon and ginger tea sweetened with a teaspoon of honey and eat a banana half an hour before you begin your practice.  Please notify me if you have a condition that she should know about that may affect your physical capacity.
